Vera van de Straat obtained her master degree in Sociology at Radboud University Nijmegen in The Netherlands (2011).
In October 2012 she started as a teaching assistant at the Sociology department of Ghent University. She teaches workshops in sociological research and demography and coordinates the organization of exams.
In her PhD research she aims to disentangle the association between age, ageing and sleep problems among older European adults using data from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). In this research she focuses on changes in day-time activities and how they affect sleep and the medicalization of sleep. In 2016 she spent three months at the Division for Epidemiology of the Stress Research Institute, Stockholm University, that specializes in how working life affects health.
